Restful Rituals

Massage Envy

"Baths are wonderful for bedtime," says Laura Stack. They're a great way to wind down and prepare your body for sleep. But no quick dips. Make a ritual out of it. Here are some ways to turn your plain-old bathroom into a stay-at-home spa, from Janet Kinosian's The Well-Rested Woman: 60 Soothing Suggestions for Getting a Good Night's Sleep.

  • The water temperature should be at least 100 degrees Fahrenheit (that's probably warmer than your usual bathing water temp). You also want to try to keep the bath continuously hot.
  • Soak for 25 to 30 minutes, then lie down in your bed in a cool room. The resulting rise and fall in body temperature will make it easier for you to fall-and stay-asleep.
  • Try a scented bath oil. Some scents associated with relaxation are lavender, tangerine and sandalwood.
  • Pat dry, don't rub. You don't want to overstimulate your body now that you're fully relaxed!
  • If you're pregnant or you have high blood pressure or heart problems, you should consult with your doctor before starting a hot-bath ritual.
